Crafting for Christmas: A Mixed Bag of Magic, Mishaps & Merry Making

There’s something about Christmas that seems to bring out the crafter in all of us. Maybe it’s the glitter. Maybe it’s the mulled wine. Or maybe it’s simply that irresistible urge to make something—anything—that says, “Look! I tried.”

This year, Christmas crafting rather crept up on me. One minute it was August and I was admiring my tomatoes; the next minute, it was November and suddenly everyone else seemed to be churning out felt gnomes and hand-rolled beeswax candles like seasoned artisans. Meanwhile, I was still searching for the scissors.

But as with most Encore Endeavours, it’s the journey that matters—the laughter, the learning, the gentle chaos—and this year’s creative tumble into Christmas has been no exception.

The Monday Sewing Group: Where It All Began

A quick introduction to my Monday Sewing Group, a place I'll write more about another time because it really does deserve its own spotlight. For today, all you need to know is that this merry band of makers is partly to blame (or to thank!) for my recent fascination with Christmas crafting.

I’ve dabbled before, of course. One year I made all the decorations for the Christmas tree. Another year I crafted wooden plinths for candles and ornaments. And then there was the unforgettable Ski Lodge Christmas—yes, the entire house transformed, right down to a wall-sized mural of a snow-draped alpine lodge. Looking back, I realise I’ve been warming up to this crafting malarkey for years.

And then came the grandchildren, and with them the annual tradition of hand-painted Christmas cards. I wouldn’t claim to be the next Turner, but I’ve definitely improved. This year’s designs lean a little more “creatively assembled” than “purely painted”… but that’s progress in itself. Art evolves. So do Nanas.

A Foray Into the WI: Crackers, Confidence & Crafting in a Bag

I recently joined the WI—well, I’m on my trial run, but I’ve already been swept up in their warm, encouraging “come-on-you-can-do-it!” energy.

My first project? Make-your-own Christmas crackers.

Who knew such satisfaction could come from pulling something you’ve created yourself? And I must say, crafting is remarkably easy when everything arrives in a tidy little kit bag. It’s like Blue Peter for grown-ups—minus the sticky-back plastic panic.

The WI ladies are wonderfully supportive, and they make you feel instantly capable. That’s half the joy of crafting: doing it in a community where you can laugh at your mistakes and celebrate your triumphs together.

The Great Dress Experiment & The Upside-Down Pattern Incident

Back to the Monday Sewing Group, where I ambitiously began cutting out a dress for my granddaughter. Four weeks later… not a stitch sewn. And at one point I realised I’d cut a bit out upside down.

Classic Encore Endeavours: learning through laughter.

Will she still fit in it by the time I’m finished? Unclear. But hope springs eternal—and besides, I’ve now got the materials for Christmas bunting, which will happen next week. Probably. Hopefully.

We also made felt Christmas gnomes, and—wait for it—mine actually turned out perfectly. Nothing upside down. Nothing inside out. A small, stuffed miracle.

Christmas Cards: Reinvented and Repurposed

My Christmas cards this year began at an informal little art group I drop into at home. After years of hand-painting each card, I decided to take a different approach: recycling scraps of old artwork that would normally end up in the bin.

Who knew that the “mistakes”—the paint blobs, the half-formed ideas, the abandoned sketches—could become such charming Christmas cards? There’s a metaphor in there somewhere about life after retirement… but I’ll save that for another blog.

Still Dreaming: The 12 Days of Christmas Box

My final big idea (well, for this year—there’s always next January!) is a countdown Christmas box for my granddaughter. A “12 Days of Christmas” treasure chest made from an old makeup box.

Will I finish it in time? Will I start it in time? Will I find the right glue? No one knows. But the intention is there, and sometimes that’s where the best Encore Endeavours begin.

Looking Ahead: Maybe Start in January?

There are so many crafts I still want to try—and if time continues to behave the way it has this year, I may need to start next Christmas in January. But that’s the joy of it all: crafting isn’t about perfection. It’s about playfulness, connection, creativity, and occasionally gluing your fingers together.

So here’s to Christmas crafting: the triumphs, the tangles, the unplanned masterpieces, and the merry messiness of trying new things at any age.

Because at Encore Endeavours, we believe every season—Christmas included—is a chance to discover something new about ourselves… even if it’s simply that we’re very good at making gnomes.
